Hobgoblin Army List for Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd Edition

Hobgoblin Army List for Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd Edition

A New Hobgoblin Army for Oldhammer

Hobgoblins have always been an interesting part of the Warhammer Fantasy world, but I thought they deserved a little more attention on the tabletop. I've been working on a fan-made Hobgoblin army list for Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd Edition, drawing inspiration from steppe warriors, Mongolian cavalry, monstrous creatures and the sneaky, treacherous nature of Hobgoblin society.

The army list is still a work in progress, but it's already in a playable state and available to download as a PDF. I'd love to hear what other Oldhammer players think of it, particularly anyone interested in expanding the range of armies available for Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd Edition.

The idea is to create an army with a distinctive steppe-warrior character, combining fast cavalry, wolf riders, unusual beasts, ranged troops and some rather exotic war machines. There are familiar Hobgoblin units alongside some new ideas inspired by historical warfare and fantasy folklore.

What's Included in the Hobgoblin Army List?

The current draft includes a variety of troops, beasts and specialist units, offering several different ways to build a Hobgoblin force.

Cavalry and mounted warriors

  • Kheshig – elite mounted warriors inspired by the guards of the Mongol khans.

  • Mangudai – mobile horse archers suited to a fast-moving steppe army.

  • Mourngul Wolf Riders – wolf-mounted warriors bringing speed and aggression to the battlefield.

  • Hobyars – additional Hobgoblin warriors for the army.

Infantry and ranged troops

  • Steppe Warriors – the backbone of a traditional Hobgoblin force.

  • Mourngul Archers – ranged troops supporting the army from a distance.

  • Suuder Daichin – literally inspired by the idea of shadow warriors, or what a Hobgoblin might call Sneaky Gits.

  • Kharash – slaves forced into service by their Hobgoblin masters.

Beasts and monstrous creatures

  • Stone Temple Dogs – imposing creatures with a distinctive eastern-inspired character.

  • Hobhounds – powerful dogs inspired by breeds such as the Tibetan Mastiff and Mongolian Mastiff.

  • Hobhound Handlers – handlers responsible for controlling these formidable beasts.

  • Almas – yeti-like creatures or snow trolls, bringing something monstrous to the army.

War machines and support

  • Hobgoblin Hwacha – a rocket-launching weapon inspired by the historical Korean hwacha.

  • Skyrocket – another explosive addition to the army's ranged arsenal.

  • Hobgoblin War Altar – a more unusual element of the army, adding a distinctive focal point to the force.

Together, these units are intended to give the Hobgoblins their own identity on the tabletop, rather than simply making them another variation of a conventional fantasy army.

The document contains the current draft of the army list, including the unit entries illustrated below. It's a work in progress, so some parts of the army still need further development and refinement.

I've included several pages from the PDF below so you can get a better idea of the units and the direction I'm taking with the army.

What's Next for the Hobgoblins?

There is still plenty I'd like to add to the list. If there's enough interest, I'd like to develop it further with additional character and Hero selections, Allies, Mercenaries and other options to help turn the current draft into a more complete army list.

I'd also welcome feedback on the existing units, their rules and points values, and how well the army works in games of Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd Edition.

Would you use a Hobgoblin army in your games? Are there any units, characters or creatures you think are missing? Let me know in the comments. If enough people are interested, I'll look at finishing the list and expanding it further.
